Wellington Harbor by night

4 Comments 18 November 2011

Last night around 8 p.m. I walked up Mount Victoria for the first time. I’ve lived in Wellington for about three months, so that’s pretty shameful considering it’s one of the most popular things to do in the city.

Originally I thought about visiting the famous lookout point during the day, but when I mentioned it at work someone advised me to go at night as the view is absolutely amazing.

He was right.

As the last bit of the day drifted away, this gorgeous fading blue sky came out. Black mountains surrounded speckled lights from the city’s nightlife.

At 196 meters, Mt. Vic is the highest point in Wellington. Originally named Tangi Te Keo by Maoris, it offers a 360 view of the city, it’s suburbs and the water that surrounds the city.

There are several pathways to reach Mt. Vic, which can be by car or on foot. It’s more of a challenge on foot though. Traditionally, people use the Southern Walkway to reach Mt. Vic lookout point, but a friend who led me last night took me on a more exciting path that went past a barbecue on a stairway and a secret garden, which we may or may not have been trespassing.

Have you visited Mt. Vic lookout? Share your experience and images below!

All Blacks parade Wellington

2 Comments 26 October 2011

26 October 2011-A couple thousand people fill Civic Square in Wellington chanting “All Blacks, All Blacks, All Blacks.”

After a few introductions, the 2011 World Cup champions walk out just after noon waving to a slightly soggy Wellington crowd. A little rain and wind didn’t stop thousands of people from taking to the city streets to catch a glimpse of the world champs. This is the team’s third stop around the country after winning the World Cup against France on Sunday.

Parading from Civic Square to Parliament on flatbeds connected to Ford trucks, the All Blacks were all smiles as they greeted fans, signed rugby balls and posters and showed off the Webb Ellis Cup.

Photo Friday: Washington D.C.

With only two days to get from NJ to Alabama for a wedding Ric was best man at, I didn’t have much time to show Ric the East Coast of the USA. (And we had even less time after getting a flat tire in Maryland, but anyway…)

One stop on our mini-road trip of course had to be my nation’s capital, Washington D.C. It’s a stop anyone visiting the States should try and fit in, and one all Americans should get to, if not for patriotism, then just for a visit to a great city.

Ric explained our quick, cheap tour in a post earlier this week, but I wanted to look back on some of the memorable images from that day.

Vietnam Memorial

The Vietnam Memorial by Bobbi Lee Hitchon

The first time I visited the Vietnam Memorial as a child there were a lot paintings of sad people looking into the wall as a soldier stared back at them. Visiting the memorial with my dad and having him point out people he went to high school with was a pretty harsh reality of just how hard war hits home.

Lincoln Memorial

This was my favorite image from our trip to D.C. Ric was so excited to visit the capitol and up until we got there I was only excited to show him it. Because I’ve been so focused on traveling abroad, I kind of forget how special it is to travel America. Once I got to D.C. it finally hit me how much is left to explore of my homeland.

Washington Monument

I know I didn’t perfect this shot, but I think it’s a pretty classic one. So many school trip come through D.C. a day. No matter what your party of interest, most of us want to see a better America for the next generation. Seeing kids smiling and playing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial looking out to the Washington monument is a good reminder of that.

It seems all I’ve been talking/thinking about lately is island-life. Though technically I am still living it in New Zealand, it’s freezing! Longing for the warm waters around Malapascua in the Philippines and a cool Red Horse  on this floating bar just off the tiny island.

Travel Tuesday Photo: Stranded

So no one was actually stranded in this photo. But when I ran into this shipment sitting on an empty piece of beach in the remote island of Malapascua, Philippines, I imagined it was boxes of rum-the only thing left on a deserted island.

The boxes really only contained water, which I guess would come more in handy if someone was stranded on an island.

Photo Friday: Sunrise at Angkor Wat

No Comments 30 July 2011

In light of a holy theme at Zip Set Go’s Travelers’ Night In this week, I thought a good idea for photo Friday would be the world’s largest religious monument, Angkor Wat.

Attracting visitors from all over the world to what is basically a city in itself, Angkor Wat is located just outside of Siem Reap in Cambodia. Staying out of the debates over how much time one would need at this monument or the best time of day to see it, here is just one photo of the great place in all its glory.

This photo was taken just after 6 a.m. on a weekday in May 2011. We arrived about 30 minutes prior to sunset and the best seats in the the house were already almost filled. Here you can see dawn breaking over Angkor Wat and the scene’s reflection in a small pond to the left of the front of it.

The sight is well worth the early wake up call.

Drool-worthy beaches: Bamboo Island

2 Comments 27 July 2011

For Travel Talk on Twitter, they asked to people to Tweet their most drool-worthy beach shot. I chose this shot of Bamboo Island in Thailand. It wasn’t my favorite beach in the world but definitely one of the most iconic shots I think I took of the Andaman Coast.

I visited here on Easter in 2011 on Blue Wind’s fish tail boat tour of Ko Phi Phi. I found the tour at my hostel. For 400TB we visited Pileh Bay, Monkey Beach, Bamboo Island, Viking Bay and Maya Bay, which is where “The Beach” with Leonardo DiCaprio was filmed. We left around 9 a.m. and returned just after sunset which we watched from our long tail boat.

Not a bad way to spend Easter Sunday, hey?

Rainforest fan palms lit by the sun

The mental image I had of myself walking through the rainforest included these bad boys. So when I finally visited Cape Tribulation I couldn’t get enough of them. Shading life below as they tower high above in the forest, these trees can reach up to 6 meters (30 feet). No trip to Cape Tribulation is complete, or possible for that matter, without checking out these plants.

Love at Jai

No Comments 25 August 2010

Have I mentioned how much I love Port Douglas yet? Something about the tropical village just takes hold of you and causes you to act in ways you wouldn’t normally act. Love, or something like it, is an often occurrence and sporadic is a way of life. Everyday I woke up there I didn’t know what my day would entail and planning just never seemed like a good idea.

One random day, my good friend Dorcey and I turned a trip to Jai Gallery into a proper photo shoot. Amongst countless photos of her and I posing to look like Kate Moss and Anna Wintour, this one just happened by accident. Nico, an artist working in the shop at the time, had left out flowers that sat perfectly around the word “Love” written in black marker on a table in the porch out back.
